About Tribal Research Institute, Manipur

Manipur, the Jewel of India as coined by Late Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru is a land inhabited by two main groups of people, The Meitei’s and the Tribal people. While the Meiteis live in the valley, the hills are mainly occupied by the Tribals. Out of the total population of more than 23 lakhs the population of the tribal exceeds 8 lakhs including 33 recognized and unrecognized tribes of Manipur.

Working Group for establishment of Tribal Research Institute had recommended establishing of the Institute. With the approval of the Govt. of India notionally established the Institute in the year 1987 which remained as a section of the Department for Tribal Development till April, 2007. The foundation stone for the TRI building was laid by the then Chief Minister, Manipur Shri Rishang Keishing on 16th September, 1987 at Adimjati Complex, Imphal and inaugurated by Shri O. Ibobi Singh, Chief Minister of Manipur on 27th December, 2006. The T.R.I. complex covers an area of 4705 sq. mt. which houses a two storeyed building of 2500 sq. mt. including Museum, Library & Auditorium.
